Reflexology treatment is given in a comfortable reclining chair with the back supported and the feet raised. The knees are bent and the lower legs are supported to ensure that the feet are totally relaxed. The session will last for approximately 1 hour, with the treatment taking approximately 45 minutes. The initial session is usually slightly longer as a consultation is carried out to ensure suitability for treatment. For children and babies with smaller feet, these times will be reduced.
Reflexology is most effective when given weekly for 6-8 weeks but a minimum of 3-4 treatments is advised in order to balance up the whole body. Cases are reviewed on an individual basis and can be continued at fortnightly, monthly or even longer periods to maintain a state of equilibrium in the body.
The technique used to perform Reflexology is a firm pressure applied to each reflex point, using the thumbs and occasionally the fingers. This should not feel ticklish, nor should it hurt and the amount of pressure can be adjusted to suit each individual.
Different sensations may be felt during treatment--a grittiness under the skin, a feeling like a fingernail is digging in, a sharpness, a feeling of bruising or simply a firm pressure. These different feelings identify to the practitioner where the imbalances in the body are occurring-- the more tender the reflex, the greater the imbalance. Sensitivity to these sensations can vary from one individual to another and in the same person from one day to another. The practitioner will sometimes be able to identify tender reflexes where there is a gritty, scrunchy feeling in a particular area. Various feelings and reactions can occur after treatment. You may feel hot or cold, wide awake and energetic or tired and lethargic. There may be some mild side effects as the body gets rid of toxins. These vary depending on where the imbalances are found and can include an increased desire to pass water, increased activity of the bowels, cold-like symptoms, skin rashes, altered sleep patterns and changes in moods. None of these should last more than a day or two and after each session the symptoms should reduce as the body regains balance.
